Time to Start Gardening!

Yesterday 41°F ~ 50°F

Garden centers are open and it is time to start gardening!

We've decided to first plant evergreens and flowering shrubs along the back fence.  Something tall enough to give us some privacy but won't grow too large.

Our shopping list:

Arborvitae Emerald Green 'Smaragd'
Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd'
  2 x $24.98  1 gallon
Evergreen.  Native to the eastern Canada and much of the north, central and upper Northeastern United States.
full sun
size  12-15 ft t x 36-48" w
space  24-36"
habit  pyramidal
water  2-3 times per week until established
hardiness  -20F
care  Apply mulch.  Emerald cedars thrive in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil with summer watering for the first few seasons. In these conditions, they grow 8 to 12 inches a year.

Lilac
Syringa
  1 x $24.98  2.33gal
full sun
blooms  early spring to summer
size  4-15' t x 4-10' w
space 4-10'
habit  rounded
water  weekly during dry spells; more often until roots established
hardiness  -30F
care  apply mulch.  Prune just after the flowers are faded if you don't want to ruin next year's blooming potential. Or prune in March.  New bushes don't require maintenance pruning until they are about 6 - 8' tall.  The newer stems won't bloom for a couple of years, but to keep the flowers coming steadily, you need to constantly renew the plants.  In general, by the time a stem reaches more than 2" in diameter, it should be pruned out.  Cut no more than 1/3 of a shrub's stems each year.

 Time to start planting!

To get the positions right, we were marking the tree's circumference with a long white rope.

And Honza had to create a big crime scene...

By the way, that looks more like a dire wolf than a dog.

Our garden soil was a soft, crumbly dark soil and was very easy to dig.  We planted 3 trees easily in less than an hour.  What a difference from Georgia's red clay or Florida's lime sand!

 Arborvitae

Boy, we need a new fence....
